If you are looking for a simple craft that your kiddos can do on their own, this one is for you! With a few simple items that you likely already have on hand, your kids can bring their designs to life. They will love that they can easily be displayed for all to see and enjoy.

Supplies Needed

  1. White Coffee Filters
  2. Markers
  3. Pipe cleaners or close pins
  4. Water
  5. Tray or cookie sheet with rim
  6. Dropper or syringe

Directions for Coffee Filter Butterflies

  • First, fold 2 white coffee filters in half
  • Next, color them the design and pattern of your choice!
  • After colored, place them on a cookie sheet or pan and use your syringe or dropper to soak the filter with water.
  • Allow the coffee filters to air dry, or dry with a hair dryer.
  • Once they are dry, unfold the coffee filters and begin accordion-folding each one.
  • Finally, place the folded coffee filters on top of one another.
  • In the center, place a close pin or, if doing a pipe cleaner, fold the pipe cleaner in half around the coffee filters and twist. The ends will become the “antennas”.
  • Fan out the butterfly wings and ta-da!….a beautiful, simple butterfly that your kids can make over and over.

Pro tips

  • Don’t be afraid to play around with colors and the amount of water you use.
  • In order to have a colorful butterfly, color darkly with your markers.
  • Wait until the filter is completely dry before trying to fold it.
  • Press firmly along the coffee filter with each fold when on the step of making the accordian-folds.

I hope you and your kiddos enjoy this easy summer kids craft as much as me and mine do!
